Bob Myers Discusses Plans Ahead of Thursday's Draft

With the draft now just a few days away, the Warriors are making their final preparations before going into one of the most pivotal points of the offseason. Having both the #7 and #14 picks gives the Warriors plenty of options, and just like a year ago, they can either trade the pick for immediate help or keep the picks and draft players that they hope will contribute both right away and for years down the line.

In recent days/weeks, people have begun to believe that the Warriors are leaning towards trading the picks for immediate help. Although a GM would never reveal his team’s true intentions, Myers expressed that the Warriors do expect to keep the picks, although that is subject to change:

“Today, right now, yeah, we're drafting 7 and 14,” said Myers. “Don't get mad if we don't in three days. That means something changed.”

If the Warriors do make a trade, it is likely that they would be eyeing a star to add to their core. A trade-up has never really seemed likely, and Myers’ comments support this idea.

“I think it's going to be tough, based on conversations...Those teams want young players, young stars,” said Myers. “They seem to be holding on pretty tight (to their picks.)”

If the Warriors do decide to keep one or both of their picks, the interesting debate will be whether to take the player who is most suited to help right away or the player who has the most upside down the road. Obviously the Warriors would like a player that could do both, but Myers was noncommittal when asked about the Warriors preference this year.

"The evidence would support maybe going younger sometimes,” said Myers. “Our job is to look at that information and decide if we want to value it.” However, later in the press conference, he also said that the Warriors “would like whoever we take to be supplemental and be playable right away.”

Despite some tough decisions looming ahead, the bottom line is that the Warriors have plenty of options as to how they want to improve their team through the draft, and that is a good thing.

“I like our picks, we have a lot of good voices in the room... we're excited about it.”
